"Big Sur, south of Carmel in northern California's Monterey County, probably has the wildest and most exciting coastline in America. The highway running along the coast in this area is one of the most beautiful drives in the country.

It is quite mountainous in Big Sur, as you can see in the background of my painting. The coastal cliffs can make it quite a job to get down to the beach. It is so rare to see the surf at Big Sur without a lot of mist, that this view, with its sudden flashes of sunshine, is quite special to me." — Peter Ellenshaw
